LADAKH GEOGRAPHY

The overland approach to Ladakh from Kashmir Valley via Kargil is approx. 434 Km, which remains open for traffic from 15th April till November end depends on the weather conditions. This is the easiest way to reach Leh. One can take flight from Delhi , Mumbai or the state of india and same day night night stay in Srinagar, Sonmarg. Next day proceed for road trip to Leh with overnight halt at Kargil. This route takes 02 days to reach Ladakh. The most dramatic part of this road journey is the ascent up the 11,500 feet 3,505 m high Zoji-La, the pass in the Great Himalayan Wall that serves as the gateway to Ladakh. Manali to Leh - Since 1989, the 473 km. Manali-Leh road has been serving as the second overland approach to Ladakh. Open for traffic from around mid-June to early October. One can take Volvo bus service till Manali and next day they can proceed for Leh. This Route takes 2 days to reach Leh with overnight halt at Jispa or Sarchu.This high road traverses the upland desert plateau of Rupsho, altitude ranges from 3,660m to 4,570m. A number of high passes fall enroute among which the highest one known as Taklang-La is world's second highest motorable pass at an altitude of 17,469 feet/5,235m.

Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is the main airport of the area. The flights are directly connected from Delhi, Srinagar and Jammu; by the flights run by Air India, Go Air and Jet Airways, Vistara. The schedules are set already though, but these are subject to change according to the weather. It is advised that you keep your plans flexible. Even now Go Air operates directly flight from Mumbai. Indian Airlines and Go Air also operates 2 - 3flights in a week from Jammu and once in a week from Srinagar.
